5 Tips to Prepare for a Photoshoot

If you’re uncomfortable being in front of the camera, photoshoots can be stressful and full of pressure. But that reflects in your completed photos. So I want to prepare you the best I can for a photoshoot, so you’re comfortable and ready to go!

I like to make photoshoots super fun for my couples! I love to have music playing while I photograph couples. I think it makes the environment more fun and relaxing, and it produces the best candid shots. Imagine jamming out to your favorite song – the shots are priceless! Here are a few things you can do to prepare for a photoshoot.

1. Outfits

Pick out your outfits ahead of time, and I recommend picking clothes that are easy to change in and out of. My photoshoots include a few outfit changes, depending on the package. I typically recommend a casual outfit (Ex: jeans and a nice top) and a more formal outfit (Ex: a dress/skirt for ladies and slacks and a button-down for men). Outfit changes give a nice variety to shots.

2. Accessories

Another thing to consider is jewelry, makeup, and hairstyles for the photoshoot. You’ll need to pick things out ahead of time and make it easy to switch between looks. An insider tip is to schedule your trial hair and makeup on the same day as your photoshoot. That way, you can see what it all looks like on camera and make adjustments where needed.

3. Props

Are there any props you want to bring? I’ve had couples bring umbrellas, flowers, even vintage cars to shoots before, and the photos turned out great! Pets are also fun special guests at photoshoots!

While props are fun and a great addition, don’t allow them to be a distraction. The photos should have you and your love as the center point. Don’t be offended if your photographer asks you to put the prop to the side for a few shots!

4. Chat With Your Photographer

Make sure you are all on the same page about the details of the photoshoot. When and where are you meeting? Are there changing rooms you can use, or will you be changing in the car? Trust me; it happens sometimes with outdoor locations! Nail down the details, so there aren’t last-minute mishaps.

You also want to chat about what happens after the photoshoot is completed. How soon can you expect raw files of your photos, and when will you receive edited photos back? Double-check what their process is so you aren’t left wondering.

5. Relax

The biggest thing is to relax! The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and enjoying the moment with your love. Don’t worry about how you look. Your photographer will instruct you on poses and ideas for shots. Just follow directions and have fun!

There’s no need to stress about photoshoots. You’ll end up with photos you love if you take the necessary steps to prepare for a photoshoot and relax. It’s your photographer’s job to make sure you look flawless during your shoot. If you’re interested in booking a photoshoot with me, you can view my packages here.
